PUBLIC
FORUMS
Frida Berrigan
appeared on a panel on "Corporate Influence in U.S. Defense
and Foreign Policy" at a conference held in Washington under
the auspices of Women for Responsible National Security in December
2000, and later spoke at a regional conference on the same topic
at the Carter Center in Atlanta, GA, in June 2001. Berrigan also
participated in a panel on "The New Role of Military and Space
Technology" at a February 2001 teach-in at Hunter College in
NY sponsored by the International Forum on Globalization.
Michelle
Ciarrocca spoke at a consultation on National Missile Defense
held at the New School and organized by the WomenÌs International
League for Peace and Freedom in September 2000.
Belinda
Cooper briefed Teresa Serra Majem, the Chairperson of the Information
Society Committee of the Regional Parliament of Catalonia on e-commerce,
information technology and digital divide issues for the US Department
of State, Office of International Visitors, in January 2001. In
addition, Cooper presented "Japan and Humanitarian Intervention"
at the Conference on Self-Determination, Security and the United
Nations, sponsored by Denver University and the International Peace
Academy at Vail, Colorado, in December 2000. She later presented
"The Idea of Asia" at the Conference on Comprehensive
Security in Asia, at Tsukuba University, Japan, in March 2001.
Ian Cuthbertson
participated in a conference on "The New Financial Underplannings
of International Terrorism in the 21st Century" at the University
of Manchester, England, March 5-7, 2001. On March 8, 2001, he moderated
a panel with Mark Medish (former senior adviser to President Clinton)
and Steve Solnick of Columbia University at the Carnegie Council,
on "Putin: One Year After."
William
D. Hartung spoke on "Military Preparedness, Military Budgets:
What Can We Expect from the New Bush Administration," at a
Council on Foreign Relations Roundtable discussion on January 12,
2001. He testified on "The Role of U.S. Arms Transfers in Human
Rights Violations: Rhetoric Versus Reality," before the House
International Relations Committee on March 7, 2001 and he participated
on a panel on March 22, 2001, on "Small Arms and the War in
the Congo: Prospects for Peace in the DRC," at the UN Conference
on the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Mira Kamdar
spoke on "Reinventing India: The Role of Information Technology"
to the Pacific Council in San Jose, California, on April 25, 2001,
and participated at the South Asia Center of the Jackson School
for International Affairs at the University of WashingtonÌs workshop
on bringing greater awareness about India into Washington StateÌs
curriculum, on May 12, 2001.
Nina Khruscheva
presented her paper, "Cultural Contradictions of Post-Communism:
Why Liberal Reforms Did Not Succeed in Russia," at the Ed A.
Hewett Forum on Former Soviet Affairs, Brookings Institution, Washington,
D.C., and at the Houston World Affairs Council, both in October
2000; she also presented the paper at the Harriman Institute at
Columbia University in February 2001.
Armando
Bravo Martinez briefed a group of economists, journalists, entrepreneurs
and academics on E-Commerce and the Global Economy for the US Department,
Office of International Visitors, in March 2001.
Dena Montague
gave a presentation on the "Economic Roots of U.S. Interest
in the Congo" at a conference on "Africa and the 21st
Century: Prospect and Retrospect" held at Edinboro University,
in Edinboro, Pennsylvania, March 30 and 31, 2001.
A reception
was held for Karl E. Meyer, the new editor of World Policy
Journal, on November 14, 2000.
A reception
was held in honor of the WPI Advisory
Board at the World Policy Institute Offices on June 13,
2001.

AND RADIO
Ian Cuthbertson
made two appearances on BBC Radio, one on January 12, 2001, discussing
the outcome of the American presidential elections, and then on
March 7, 2001, discussing the long term effect of the Real IRAÌs
attack and the implications for other media outlets covering terrorist
activity. His other media appearances include a January 31, 2001
interview with Hellenic Radio, discussing fissile material smuggling
from Russia and Central Asia into the Middle East and the Balkans,
a February 9, 2001 interview with Singapore TV, discussing the scale
and nature of the threat posed by the possibility of terrorism,
co-anchoring the "Year in Review" on Fox News, and two
interviews on Pacifica Radio, one on March 18, 2001, discussing
the growing Albanian insurgency against the Macedonian government
and its wide implications for stability in the Balkans and Eastern
Mediterranean, and another on April 1, 2001, discussing the arrest
of former Yugoslavian President Slobodan Milosevic.
Mira Kamdar
did an interview for NPRÌs Radio Times with Marty Moss-Coane,
broadcast from WHYY in Philadelphia. She also led a symposium for
the Asia Society in October 2000. KamdarÌs television appearances
include C-SPANÌs Book TV Biography series on January 6 and 7, 2001,
and an interview with Riz Khan on his show, Q&A, on CNN International.
Armando
Bravo Martinez provided expert commentary on the impeachment
of Indonesian President Wahid and the installation of President
Megawati Sukarnoputri for CNN en Español in July 2001.
Stephen
Schlesinger appeared on CNN on January 28, 2001 to talk about
the Bush approach to foreign policy. He was interviewed by radio
stations in Los Angeles and NYC, as well as in Italy, on the American
presidential elections.
Mustapha
Tlili was interviewed in early 2001 by David Alpern for his
Newsweek "On Air" program. He discussed the prospects
for Middle East peace as a result of the election of General Ariel
Sharon as Prime Minister of Israel.

The Arms
Trade ProjectÌs January 2001 panel on the fortieth anniversary
of President EisenhowerÌs military-industrial complex speech was
discussed in political commentaries in the Boston Globe on
January 16, 2001, and again on January 29, 2001, in the New York
Observer. The panel was broadcast on C-Span February 19, 2001.
Frida Berrigan

for Common Dreams (April 9, 2001), a website dedicated to
progressive news and commentary.
Michelle
Ciarrocca wrote a letter to the editor of The New York Times
(August 27, 2000), on "Hypocritical Arms Sales." She also
wrote an article for the Global Beat Syndicate (March 23,
2001), on "BushÌs Flawed Nuclear Defense Policy."

D. Hartung and Michelle Ciarrocca did a piece for the
Baltimore Sun (January 21, 2001), on "Reviving Star
Wars." In addition, their article, "Tangled Web: The Marketing
of Missile Defense 1994Ò2000," was cited in news stories in
June and July 2000 in The New York Times, the Washington
Post, and Time magazine.

Nina Khrushcheva
wrote several opinion pieces for the Los Angeles Times, including
