Governor Kathleen Blancos March 2005 trade mission to Cuba
highlighted the interest southern U.S. states have in increased
trade and interaction with their close geographic neighbor Cuba.
Cuba was Louisiana and other Southern states top export market
prior to the imposition of the embargo in 1960 and even
under current restrictions, there has been a surge in trade from
the United Staes to Cuba.
The Mobile Summit presented diverse, nationally recognized speakers
on the current U.S.- Cuba commercial relations and policy. While
the Summit focused on the impact of the U.S.-Cuba estrangement the
audience learned much about the many factors inherent in the ongoing
policy debate. Summit Co-sponsors icluded the
City of Mobile, Alabama State Port Authority, Gulf Coast Regional
Chamber Coalition, Cuba Trade Coalition, AlaCaribe Initiative, Inc.
