Shaun is absolutely right. We have a US based client in the food business who used to hire 30 or so seasonal employees in China for a few months every year, but stopped doing so b/c of the new labor contract law. Nobody seemed to care about this six months ago….

An uninformed article which clearly establishes the lack of this writer’s bona fides in this area. Not a word about the national healthcare initiative. I don’t think you get it, but that alright — you’re good on highways.

As for the preposterous comment about the government not ‘wanting to build a middle class’, well, that’s pure and simple ‘mierda’.

Excellent article on the need to reduce the cost of doing business to grow the economy. The Worldbank produces a report on how competitive countries are in this aspect as they realize how important regulation is to driving economic growth. It is a fascinating read. http://www.doingbusiness.org/

Very good suggestions. China focus too much of its development at supporting large enterprises. It is small and medium enterprises that will create most jobs. Now that export is unlikely to bounce back quickly, China will be forced to pay more attention to the entrepreneurial tradition of the Chinese people.

Good article Shaun, having set up a few small companies in China using a chinese nominee I can agree the process is absolutly rediculous, time consuming and expensive.

Once again the problem is that the Chinese government does not want to expand the middle class and so opts to keep a select few in society with most of the money.
