World Policy Journal,
a respected global affairs quarterly magazine celebrating its 25th
anniversary in 2008, is seeking a new editor-in-chief. The
Journal’s pages are distinguished by articles written in a
lively, non-academic style, coming from strong points of view
that transcend the traditional foreign-versus-domestic policy
divide. It runs policy articles that present a well-supported
argument and offer provocative policy recommendations; essays
that consider (and reconsider) such issues as immigration,
exile, and ethnicity; articles that provide insight into a
historical era, event, or person; and articles that illuminate
cultural change and cross-cultural influences; profiles that
comment on the political or cultural context of which the
subject is a part; book reviews; and reportage from regions or
on subjects not widely covered in the general media.
World Policy Journal
is the flagship publication of the World Policy Institute, a
non-partisan source of informed policy leadership for more than
four decades, develops and champions innovative policies that
require a progressive and global point of view. In an
increasingly interdependent world, WPI focuses on complex
challenges that demand cooperative policy solutions to achieve:
an inclusive and sustainable global market economy, engaged
global civic participation and effective governance, and
collaborative approaches to national and global security.
The ideal
candidate will:
* have experience with and positive attitude toward using the
internet, blogs, event recordings, and other multimedia formats
to form an integral part of the Journal publication and raise
WPJ’s online profile
* have a distinguished publication record, preferably including
one or more books.
* have access to a network of writers who bring a “world”
perspective to their writing
* have a
record of finding and developing policy analysts, writers, and
speakers with fresh, insightful and persuasive perspectives on
key issues
* attract high-quality contributors to a journal that is
ambitious, but with limited circulation and budget for
commissioned pieces
* be committed to reflecting the World Policy Institute’s
mission statement in the pages of WPJ
* ensure that each WPJ issue includes “must-read” content in an
ever-more crowded arena
* have a demonstrated sensibility for identifying and assembling
ahead-of-the-curve issue themes that speak to policy challenges
and potential solutions that are crucial but have not yet
received sufficient attention
* be expert at structural editing as well as line editing to
ensure pungent, brief, clear, and telling writing
* have a record of meeting deadlines with efficiency and good
cheer
* experience in, and demonstrated imaginative contribution to,
developing a journal's circulation, and in obtaining feedback
from key subscribers
* collaborate with World Policy Institute staff in developing
events –for example with WPJ authors or potential authors--
designed to raise WPJ’s visibility
* be effective at working with the Executive Director, Board,
and staff in a collegial and productive manner
The appointment
may be part-time or full-time, depending on the candidate’s set of
