The hacktivist group Anonymous is a loose collective of cyber activists, united only by a broad philosophy of eradicating corruption. The group has gained notoriety for its high profile attacks on governments around the world and international corporations like Paypal, Visa, and Sony. The decentralized and nebulous structure of Anonymous accounts for its global reach and diversity in targets.

World Policy Journal has compiled an overview of Anonymous’s activity in 2011-2012. The map below illustrates the regional density of its attacks over that period. Pie charts display the number of events in their respective areas and group the targets into four categories. On the right is a magnification of the European region. Each symbol classifies the type of cyber attack.
