Peter B. Kaufman is president and executive producer of Intelligent Television. Intelligent Television produces films, television programs, and video projects in close association with educational and cultural institutions, and its research and consulting projects explore how to make educational and cultural material more widely accessible worldwide. Mr. Kaufman serves as an expert advisor on access issues to the Library of Congress’s Division of Motion Pictures, Broadcasting and Recorded Sound and co-chair of the JISC Film & Sound Think Tank. He previously served as president and publisher of TV Books, a book publishing enterprise he founded and sold to Lorne Michaels’s film and television company Broadway Video, and director of strategic initiatives at Innodata Isogen, and he recently completed an appointment as associate director of Columbia University’s Center for New Media Teaching and Learning. His current work involves building new forms of nonfiction video production and creating new business models for networking cultural and educational institutions. Formerly director of publications at the Institute for EastWest Studies, he has served as a Senior Fellow of the World Policy Institute since 1990 and is a member of the World Policy Journal’s editorial board.
Educated at Cornell and Columbia Universities, Mr. Kaufman has written about culture and history for the London Times Literary Supplement, The Nation, the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Russian History, Scholarly Publishing, Slavic Review, and various other books and publications. He is the author most recently of “On Building a New Market for Culture: Virtue and Necessity in a Screen-Based Economy”; with Jen Mohan, “Video Use in Higher Education”; with Jen Mohan, “The Economics of Independent Film and Video Distribution in the Digital Age” for the Tribeca Film Institute; with Jeff Ubois, “Good Terms: Toward Improving the Equity of Commercial-Noncommercial Partnerships in the Digitization of Cultural Heritage Materials”; “Video, Education, and Open Content: Toward a New Research and Action Agenda”; and “Marketing Culture in the Digital Age: A Report on New Business Collaborations between Libraries, Museums, Archives, and Commercial Companies” for Ithaka and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. A sought-after speaker, Mr. Kaufman recently gave the keynote address at the International Federation of Television Archives general assembly in Copenhagen and the keynote address at the Kinemathek’s forum on film and digitization in Berlin.
